Tales from the Son of Sledgehammer
The new Hardcore History Addendum interview provides a new look at the life and times of one of the most celebrated U.S. Marines in the Second World War
We just released a new Hardcore History Addendum show with author Henry Sledge.
Henry is the son of author E.B. (Eugene) Sledge, the Second World War U.S. Marine Corps combat veteran who wrote “With the Old Breed at Peleliu and Okinawa”, which in my opinion is one of the best Second World War combat memoirs ever written by an American. Here’s an Amazon link to the book (but please pick it up wherever you prefer to buy books). The father's book
Henry's new book is about his dad, both as a Marine and as a father... but it's also about his dad's famous memoir. Henry says that the majority of the manuscript his dad actually penned was left out of the (just over 300 page) book his father wrote. So the son put together a book that includes much of what was excised from the father's work. It's a much needed addition (and correction) of the historical record. If you enjoyed Eugene Sledge’s original work, you will love the son’s homage to it.
Henry Sledge's book is called: “The Old Breed... The Complete Story Revealed: A Father, A Son, and How WWII in the Pacific Shaped Their Lives” and is available now. Here's the Amazon link...but please feel free to purchase it wherever you prefer to get your books. The son's book
Here's a link to the conversation between Henry and me. We called the show “Sledgehammer and Big Shot” (their two nicknames). Hope you enjoy the discussion as much as I did.
Reminder too that I am heading to Atlanta, Raleigh, Austin and Houston this August (and Portland, Oregon in September) to do some live appearances. If you'd like to come too, go to our website at dancarlin.com and links to purchase tickets can be found right on the front page.
Thanks for everything gang!
