A new Hardcore History Addendum is now available. We called it “So, you say you want a revolution?” and it reflects on certain aspects of the late 1960s/early 1970s (but concentrates mostly on 1968).
It probably sounds a bit like a Common Sense show, but unlike CS there is no real analysis or opinion in it. As I said in this show, I feel like political opinion or current events analysis as we used to know it has become somewhat irrelevant. This is an attempt to discuss things that may (or may not) have relevance to our current time and place without getting mired down in the politics inherent in opinion or analysis. That doesn't mean it is without bias or prejudice by the host, just that by steering clear of opinion and analysis we eliminate a large part of the root elements that has often made political discourse between people who disagree all but impossible.
Living, as we do, in a society that relies on compromise to get things done, and knowing (as we should) that like it or not, we are all in this together is worth remembering. Especially when we see what can happen when things get past the failsafe point. That's what a look back to the late 1960s is good for. It's an example of how things might look of we allow things to get too out of hand. And a graphic reminder of that might be in order considering how few people are now old enough to recall the last time things got significantly revolutionary or “civil war-ish” in the U.S..
This is NOT a Hardcore History show on that era. It is far too lightweight and non-comprehensive a show to fill a role like that. It is, instead, some material I wrote years ago that seems even more timely for us today than when I originally penned it. Maybe it WON'T end up being timely. That is my hope. But in case it does, it might be worth recalling what we might be getting into. Not a prediction of future events (which is impossible of course) but an era that has the potential to “rhyme” with our own if we aren't careful.
So, I hope we ARE careful. Stay safe everyone. And here's the show if you decide it sounds like something you would like to hear:
